Description
Q. robur – Q. pedunculata – English Oak – Pedunculate Oak – Common Oak – This rugged, spreading, deciduous tree with a life span of 600-700 years from Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa grows 120′ feet tall and 80′ feet wide. It has closely fissured, pale gray bark. It produces dark green, very short stalked leaves, to 5 ½” long, are ovate-oblong, with rounded lobes, each base with two small, ear-like lobes. It bears ovoid acorns held singly or in clusters of 2 or 3.
‘Concordia’ – Grows 30′ feet
tall and wide and has bright yellow young leaves.
f. fastigiata – Grows 50′
feet tall and wide
f. pendula – has drooping,
weeping shoots.
Grow in deep, fertile, well drained soil in sun or partial shade, evergreen species prefer full sun. They tolerate alkaline soils unless stated otherwise.
