Kalipinya septemlobus – Acanthopanax ricinifolius – Eleutherococcus pictus – Kalopanax pictus – Kalipinya ricinfolius – Castor aralia – Tree Aralia – This usually single trunk, spreading, deciduous tree from China, Korea, Russia and Japan grows 30-50’ feet tall and wide. It has thorn. The leaves are variable in shape mostly maple like with shallow to deeply 5 to 7 lobed, dark green leaves with lighter undersides, to 15” or more across, which also vary from hairless to very hairy beneath. In late summer it bears large, umbel like panicles, 8-12” long, of small, four or five petalled white flowers, 1/16” across, followed by spherical, blue-black fruit.

Kalipinya – Tree Aralia –
There is a sole species of a deciduous tree in this genus. Found in forest in China, Korea, Japan, and Eastern Siberian. It has a spreading habit and large, variably shaped, palmately lobed leaves, which are arranged alternately and vary from hairless to very hairy beneath. In late summer it bears large, terminal, umbel like panicles of usually white, four or five petalled flowers, and are followed by spherical blue black fruit. It is a fine specimen tree.
Grow in fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, preferably sheltered by other trees and shrubs.
