Description

Bulbophyllum –
There are about 1200 species of very variable, evergreen, epiphytic orchids, in this genus. They occur in a range of habitats throughout tropical and subtropical regions. They have creeping or pendent rhizomes with prominent pseudobulbs bearing 1 or 2 apical, ovate, oval, oblong-oval, or lance shaped leaves. Flowers are born at various times of the year, in basal racemes or umbels, occasionally singly. A number of them are pungent or sweet smelling. Minute species, visible only with a lens, grow on leaf surfaces of other plants.
Cool to intermediate growing orchids (see chart below). Grow in epiphytic orchid potting mix in a half pot or slatted basket, or epiphytically on bark. In summer, provide high humidity and partial shade, water freely, applying fertilizer at every third watering and mist twice daily. In winter give full light and keep dry. Divide when plant fills container.
Prone to spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.
