Description

Anemonella – Rue Anemone

There is single species of a small tuberous, dense clump forming perennial from woodland in Eastern North America, in this genus.  Grown for it’s attractive flowers.  It’s slow to establish but will eventually increase to form colonies 12” across.  It produces compound leaves with few but rather large leaflets.  Flowers are large for the size of the plant and few on each short flowering stems bearing flowers in shades of white to pale mauve.  Great for in a woodland gardens, or as an under planting in shady shrub border or in rock gardens.

Grow in moist moderately fertile, humus rich, well-drained soil in partial shade and divide in early spring.

Prone to powdery mildew, leaf smut, rust, and slug damage.

Anemonella thalictroides – Found in mountain woodlands in eastern USA and Southeastern Canada.  It can grow up to 8” tall and 12” wide.  It produces dark bluish green leaves 4-6” long with 5-9 ovals to egg shape leaflets.  In spring and early summer it bears delicate loose umbels of 2-4 pale pink or white bowl shaped flowers ¾” wide with 5-10 petals.
