Description
Malvastrum –
There are about 30 species of spreading to erect, evergreen, sometimes semi evergreen perennials and shrubs, in this genus. They occur on rocky outcrops, rocky areas of prairies, and alluvial soil in arid and semi arid areas of North and South America. They produces alternate, smooth edged or lobed leaves are lance shaped to rounded, 1-4 ½” long leaves. They are usually grown for their Hibiscus like, funnel or cup shaped, yellow, orange, pink, or red flowers, either solitary and axillary, or borne in terminal or axillary racemes or spikes. Grow in a sunny border or on a bank.
Grow in well drained, sandy or gravelly soil in full sun.
M. lateritium – This prostrate perennial from Argentina and Uruguay grows 8-10″ tall and 5-6′ feet wide. It produces alternate, rounded leaves, to 4″ long, with 3-5 wedge shaped to oblong lobes. From late spring to summer it bears solitary, cup shaped, peach colored flowers, to 2″ across, with yellow anthers and deep yellow centers surrounded by deep rose-pink bands.
