Description

Schomburgkia –
This orchid genus is closely related to Laelia, and is about 12-15 species of large,,, evergreen, epiphytic or lithophytic orchids. They naturally occur from rainforest and moist cliffs on rocks, at low to medium altitudes in the West Indies and tropical North and South America. They have thick, elongated, spindle shaped to cylindrical, sometimes hollow pseudobulbs, and may reach 6′ feet in length.
Intermediate growing orchids (see intro.). Grow in epiphytic orchid potting mix in containers or slatted baskets. In the growing season, water freely and apply a half strength balanced liquid fertilizer every 4 weeks, provide high humidity, and bright indirect light. Water sparingly and provide full light in winter.
Prone to scale insects, spider mites, aphids, whiteflies, and mealybugs.
