This bigeneric hybrid genus of one evergreen shrub, is a cross between Rhododendron trichostomum and Ledum glandulosum var. columbianum, with characteristics intermediate between those of its parents. It is grown for its lance shaped, dark green leaves, and large terminal corymbs of tubular flowers. Grow in a woodland garden, or at the front a shrub border, associates well with dwarf Rhododendrons.
Grow in humus rich, moist but well drained, acidic soil in partial shade.
x L. ‘Arctic Tern’ – Rhodendron ‘Arctic Tern’ – This upright to spreading shrub grows 24″ tall and wide. It produces lance shaped, hairy, dark green leaves, to 2″ long. In late spring and early summer it bears rounded corymbs of tubular, 5 lobed, pure white flowers, to 3/4″ long.
