Acanthostacys
Of the bromeliad family from central and South America consist of a single species. It has unusual growth habit form other bromeliad. Spreading by creeping roots that are drooping, very slender with silvery scales bearing clusters of hair. The structure that carries the flower looks like the leaf, and is spiny and bright green. The flower is a small cone like spike of yellow flowers that are long lived backed by bight orange bracts with spiny edges and tips, flowers develop to be sweet edible fruit.
Likes spots with circulating air in sunny position in a humus rich fertile well-drained soil. Keep well watered.

Acanthostachys strobilacea – Grows 3’ feet tall and bears tubular yellow flowers on dense leaf like structure on reddish orange bracts. The leaves are spiny and bright green.
