Chamaedaphne – Cassandra –

There is a single species of a evergreen shrub, in this genus. It occurs in moist, peaty soil, in bogs and at pond margins in Northern temperate regions. It is grown for its alternate, glossy, dark green leaves and it’s urn shaped white flowers. C. calyculata is suitable for a woodland garden.

Grow in moist, peaty, acidic soil in sun or dappled shade.

Prone to rust, dieback, Exobasidium galls, and leaf spots.

C. calyculata – Leatherleaf – This evergreen shrub from Northern Europe, Northern Asia and North America grows 30″ tall and 36″ wide. From slender, arching shoots it carries obovate to oblong, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves, to 2″ long, scaly beneath. In spring it bears small, urn shaped white flowers in arching, one sided, leafy racemes, 1 ½-5″ long.
