Description
+ Crataegomespilus –
This hybrid genus, is a cross between two genera, but in a sense not a true hybrid. It originated in France in 1895 it is graft hybrid between Crataegus and Mespilus rather then the more usually sexual hybrid. These result when the tissues of the stock and scion of a graft mix together and the new shoots that sprout from it show characteristics of both.
It is easily enough grown in sun or partial shade with a cool climate in a sheltered position with deep, moist soil.
+ Crataegomespilus dardarii ‘Jules d’Asnieres’ – Bronvaux Medlar ‘Jules d’Asnieres’ – This is a wide spreading, small tree grows 15-20′ feet tall, especially attractive for its comparatively large white to pinkish white flowers that appear in late spring. Leaves turn yellow and orange autumn tints. The branches and flower stalks are coated in gray wool like that of the Medlar, and are occasionally thorny, and the leaves are smooth edged to deeply lobed. The fruits are also Medlar like but smaller, and borne in clusters. Occasionally branches will revert to one or other parent.
