Nothoscordum – False Garlic –
There are about 20 species of bulbous perennials in this genus. They occur from rocky hillside to disturbed ground in North and South America. They have linear, basal leaves and, from spring to summer, it bears loose umbels of 6 tepaled, funnel, bell, or almost star shaped flowers, held on erect, leafless stems. They resemble Allium species but without their characteristic smell. Grow in a rock garden or raised bed. N. gracile is best in a wild garden, since it increases freely, and may become invasive.
Plant 3″ deep in any soil in full sun or partial shade in autumn.
Prone to rust.
N. gracile – N. fragrans – N. inodurum of gardens – This very vigorous, bulbous perennial from Mexico and South America grows 10-28″ tall. It produces narrow, linear basal leaves, 8-16″ long. From spring to summer it bears fragrant, umbels of 8-15 small, funnel shaped, brown or pink striped, white occasionally lilac flowers, 3/7-1/2″ long.
