Description

Pachystegia –
There is a sole species, of an evergreen shrub in the Asteraceae family, in this genus. It occurs in rocky places from sea level to Mountains in New Zealand. It has large, thick, alternate, simple leaves with a waxy, coated upper surface and felted undersides leaves. In summer it bears daisy like, solitary flower heads, to 2 ½” across, with white petals and yellow centers. Flowers are followed by rounded, fluffy brown seed heads. It is suitable for a rock garden. Tolerant of slat spray and coastal storms.
Grow in fertile, well drained soil in full sun, shelter from cold, drying winds.

P. insignis – Olearia insignis – Marlborough Rock Daisy – This evergreen, spreading shrub from New Zealand grows 1-5′ feet tall and 3-4′ feet wide. From white or beige felted shoots it carries oval to obovate, glossy, dark green leaves to 8″ long, gray green when young, and clustered at the tips of the shoots. In summer, it bears long stalked, daisy like, solitary white flower heads, to 2 ½” across, with golden yellow centers.
