M. x soulandeana – Saucer Magnolia – Tulip Magnolia – This single trunk, variable deciduous shrub or spreading tree is a cross between M. denudata and M. lilliflora and grows 20-25′ feet tall and 15-20′ feet wide. It produces pointed, obovate, dark green leaves, to 8″ long. In mid and late spring before or with the leaves it bears large, goblet shaped, fragrant flowers, 3-6″ across, varying from deep rose pink to violet-purple or pure white.
Grow in moist, well drained, humus rich, preferably acidic to neutral soil in sun or partial shade. Protect from strong and salty winds.
