There are about 18 tufted, evergreen sub-shrubs in this genus. They are found naturally occurring in dry, rocky places, in western North America. They produce mainly basal, alternate, leathery, simple, smooth edged leaves. They bear solitary, daisy like flowers.
Grow in gritty, poor to moderately fertile, sharply drained soil in full sun.
S. acaulis – Haplopappus acaulis – This mat forming sub-shrub from Western USA, grows 6″ tall and 18″ wide. From erect, slender stems it carries inversely lance shaped, pointed, dark green leaves, to 2 ½” long. In summer, bears solitary daisy like yellow flowers, to 1″ across.
