Vitaliana – Douglasia –

There is one tuft, mat or cushion forming, evergreen perennial, in this genus.  It occurs naturally in alpine and sub alpine screes, rocks, and meadows in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe.  It has rosettes of small leaves and is cultivated for its solitary white, yellow or pink flowers, produced in spring.  Grow in a rock garden, or scree bed.

Grow in leafy, moderately fertile, gritty, and moist but sharply drained soil in full sun.  Protect from winter moisture.

V. primuliflora – Androsace vitaliana – Douglasia vitaliana –This tufted, mat or cushion forming, evergreen perennial from the Mountains of Southwestern and Central Europe to Southeast Alps, and central Apennines grows 1” tall and 10” wide.  It forms tight rosettes of linear to oblong-lance shaped, pointed, usually hairy, pale green leaves, to ½” long, with silver edges.  In spring, bears solitary, tubular yellow flowers, to ¾” across, with 5 spreading lobes.
