C. speciosa – C. lagenaria – Cydonia speciosa – Pyrus japonica – Chinese Flowering Quince – This vigorous, deciduous wide spreading shrub from China grows 5-10′ feet tall and 15′ feet wide. From tangled, spiny branches it carries oval, glossy, dark green leaves, up to 4″ long and 1 ½” wide. In spring it bears clusters of 2-4 scarlet to deep red flowers, 1 3/4″ across, followed aromatic, green-yellow apple like fruit, to 2 ½” long.

Grow in moderately fertile, well drained soil in sun or partial shade. Suitable for a lightly shaded wall, but bloom and fruit best in sun. They tolerate alkalinity, but may become chlorotic on very alkaline soils. Also tolerant of pollution and urban environments.
