Euptelea –
There are about 3 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, in this genus. They occur in woodland from Eastern Himalayas to Japan. They are grown for their attractive leaves, which are alternate, simple, sharply toothed, rounded to ovate, and are often colorful in autumn. The bisexual small, petalless, green or reddish green flowers are held in globular clusters in spring, before the leaves, followed by small, winged fruits. Grow in a large shrub border or woodland garden
Grow in moderately fertile, moist but well drained soil in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered site.
E. polyandra – This spreading, suckering shrub or small tree is native to Japan and grows 25′ feet tall and 20′ feet wide,. It produces broadly heart shaped, pointed, deeply and irregularly toothed, glossy, bright green leaves, to 6″ long, tinged red when young, turning yellow and reddish in autumn. In spring before the leaves it bears clusters, 1-1 ½” across of inconspicuous, reddish green flowers. Fruits are always one seeded.
