P. thunbergii – P. thunbergiana – Japanese Black Pine – This conical tree, becoming rounded, with dark purplish gray bark, yellow brown shoots, and cylindrical-ovoid buds covered with silky white scales. It produces thick, dark gray green leaves, 3-6″ long, are borne in pairs. It bears long oval, green brown female cones are 1 ½-3″ long. Tolerate salt spray, often broken by heavy snow loads.

Grow these easily grown plants in
any well drained soil in full sun, but may need a symbiotic soil fungus to
assist nutrient uptake on poorer soils.
