Description
S. japonica – Japanese Skimma –This dome shaped to erect or creeping shrub from China, Japan, and Southeastern Asia grows 20′ feet tall and wide. It produces, oval, leathery, slightly aromatic, dark green leaves, to 4″ long. In mid and late spring it bears, slightly fragrant white flowers, 1/4″ across, sometimes tinged pink or red, often opening from red buds, in dense panicles, to 3″ long. Flowers are flowed on female plants by globular, red fruit, 3/8″ across. Both male and female plants are needed to obtain fruit.
Grow in moderately fertile, humus rich, moist but well drained soil in light dapples shade to deep shade. May become chlorotic on poor, dry soil or if over exposed to sun.
