I. ensata – I. kaempferi – Higo Iris – Japanese Flag – This beardless, Japanese iris from Northern China, Japan and Eastern Russia grows 36″ tall and produces occasionally branched stems. Leaves are 24-36″ long, with prominent midribs. In early summer, each stem bears 3 or 4 purple or red-purple flowers, 6-12″ across. Standards are erect and much smaller than the falls. They can even grow in shallow water provided the are not submerged.
