C. stolonifera – C. sericea – Red-oiser Dogwood – American Dogwood – This vigorous, suckering deciduous shrub from Eastern North America grows 6′ feet tall and 12′ feet wide. It has dark red winter shoots. It produces ovate to lance shaped, dark green leaves, to 5″ long, turn red or orange in autumn. In late spring and early summer it bears star shaped, white flowers carried in flat cymes, to 2″ across, followed by white fruit, often tinged blue. Tolerates wet soils.
Grow in full sun or very light
shade, in neutral to acidic soil that’s rich, fertile, well drained soil,
though some of the multi stemmed shrub species will grow well in boggy ground.
