P. cembra – Arolla Pine – Swiss Stone Pine – This narrow, columnar tree from Central Europe grows 30-80′ feet tall and 20-25′ feet wide.It has smooth, dark gray bark, becoming fissured with age, and densely brown hairy shoots with ovate, resinous buds.It produces stiff, dark green, long lived leaves, bluish white on the inner side, 3-6″ long, are borne in 5’s.It bears broad, oblong-conical resinous, bluish green female cones, 2 ½-3″ long, bear edible wingless seeds.It is tough and disease resistant
Grow these easily grown plants in
any well drained soil in full sun, but may need a symbiotic soil fungus to
assist nutrient uptake on poorer soils.
