B. thunbergii – Japanese Barberry – Thunberg Barberry – This dense, low growing, rounded, deciduous shrub from Japan grows 3-5′ feet tall and 8′ feet wide. It’s spines are not particularly fierce. It produces rounded, smooth edged leaves, to 1 1/4″ long, fresh green above and bluish green beneath, turning orange and red in autumn. In mid spring it bears umbel like racemes of 2-5 bell shaped, rarely solitary, red tinged, pale yellow flowers, ½” long, followed in late summer into autumn by ellipsoid, glossy red fruit, to 3/8″ long. Excellent for hedging and urban condition and is the most widely grown.

Grow in almost any well drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Fruiting and autumn color are better in sun. Trim after flowering.
